Data Set 10: Water Motion Across a Kelp Bed

ثبت نشده
چکیده

Shannon Fairres (ex-Botany grad student) wanted to determine how the amount of water flow varied in various parts of beds of giant kelp (Macrocystis pyrifera). Giant kelp is a marine brown alga found along the Pacific coast of North America. Buoyant fronds grow from an attachment (“holdfast”) on the sea floor, reaching lengths of up to 60 m. The upper parts of the fronds often form a dense canopy at the sea surface. Specifically, Shannon measured water motion at seven locations in one kelp bed in Monterey Bay (California). As shown on the map below, five locations (A-E) formed a roughly linear and evenly spaced transect from the seaward side to the shoreward side of

The Stability of Boundary Regions between Kelp Beds and Deforested Areas

Two distinct organizational states of kelp forest communities, foliose algal assemblages and deforested barren areas, typically display sharp discontinuities. Mechanisms responsible for maintaining these state differences were studied by manipulating various features of their boundary regions. Urchins in the barren areas had significantly smaller gonads than those in adjacent kelp stands, imply...

Temporal variations in air-sea CO2 exchange near large kelp beds near San Diego, California

This study presents nearly continuous air-sea CO2 flux for 7 years using the eddy covariance method for nearshore water near San Diego, California, as well as identifying environmental processes that appear to control temporal variations in air-sea CO2 flux at different time scales using time series decomposition. Monthly variations in CO2 uptake are shown to be positively influenced by photosy...

Blade motion and nutrient flux to the kelp, Eisenia arborea.

Marine algae rely on currents and waves to replenish the nutrients required for photosynthesis. The interaction of algal blades with flow often involves dynamic reorientations of the blade surface (pitching and flapping) that may in turn affect nutrient flux. As a first step toward understanding the consequences of blade motion, we explore the effect of oscillatory pitching on the flux to a fla...

Spatial patterns of invertebrate settlement in giant kelp forests

Settlement of kelp-associated organisms may vary as they are delivered to (and through) giant kelp (Macrocystis pyrifera) forests, with implications for local population dynamics and community structure. Previous work suggests that settlement of invertebrates with long pelagic durations would be reduced as they move from an offshore environment toward the interior of kelp forests due to dampene...

Seasonal differences in the effects of oscillatory and uni‐directional flow on the growth and nitrate‐uptake rates of juvenile Laminaria digitata (Phaeophyceae)

The influence of oscillatory versus unidirectional flow on the growth and nitrate-uptake rates of juvenile kelp, Laminaria digitata, was determined seasonally in experimental treatments that simulated as closely as possible natural environmental conditions. In winter, regardless of flow condition (oscillatory and unidirectional) or water velocity, no influence of water motion was observed on th...
